Ultimate 2 Travel Reviews in 1-Malacca & Hainan

ADL 3 Jun 2011 88

After receiving numerous queries on the above two deals, we decided to combine them into one post for today. Apologies for the late replies to your queries and for the upload of this post. Due to our constraint in manpower, we are unable to answer each and every mail so promptly, but we will do our best before the deal ends. Keep it short, just continue reading this post to find out more about these two awesome deals by Deal.com.sg

First up, we will start with somewhere that is near to Singapore.

A more realistic view of A Famosa Villas

TERMS & CONDITIONS:

WHAT ADL SAYS:

We will keep it short and sweet since we are condensing two posts into one today. Overall, this deal is a pretty decent deal if compared to the rates published by A Farmosa itself.  The usual rate is S$405/night irregardless of weekend surcharge or not.

However we have found another rather similar promotion elsewhere HERE. It is going for RM493/unit/night on offpeak timings (Sunday to thursday). Friday + RM130, Saturday + RM320. Let’s compare.

For a family going on a Saturday:

Using the promotion above:
(RM493 + RM320) x 1.05 (credit card processing fees 5%)=RM$853.65=SGD$355 ( With breakfast for 8)

Using Deal.com.sg
S$190 +S$100= S$290  (No breakfast)

The breakfast item is only for reference and we will not factor in the cost for the calculation above. Therefore, even with ADL’s cheapest find, Deal.com.sg ‘s Malacca deal is still considered more worthwhile. Therefore, it is verified an authentic good deal :)

Next up, let’s travel north to Hainan Island.

Beautiful…

TERMS & CONDITIONS:

WHAT ADL SAYS:

Having been to Hainan Island ourselves, we spent quite some time double checking this deal authenticity. $100 for 2 for a 5D4N land trip + all the meals?!  That.is.a.crazy.deal.

When such an unbelievable deal pops up, ADL will become a bit skeptical and probe deeper to ensure that it is an authentic deal. We scan through the terms and conditions and realized there are not much area whereby the agency can impose more costs or taxes. Compulsory tip of S$6/day/ pax for the guide is stated. You can also actually book your own flight through Jetstar or Tiger Airways, which mean it lowers the risk of being charged absurdly high taxes and airport fees.

Having said that, it is no doubt a good deal.($50 for 4 Night of accommodation? Not to mention meals included) It such a good deal that it is pretty unbelievable. So our guess is that, beware and be very careful of the Itinerary. Other than that, it should be fine. If you are interested to know the places of attraction prices, look below in the comments section.

Here are some of the reviews of Travel Star Pte Ltd for your reference: http://www.travelagents.com.sg/travel_agent/Travel_Star_travelstar.html (Not too good in our opinion)

ADL will appreciate any feedbacks with regards to this merchant in the comments section below or with regards to the Malacca deal :)

Thank you. PS: don’t forget to subscribe to us on the right!

    Extracted from our co-founder’s experience:

“Transportation in Hainan is really quite a problem especially if you are not familiar with the area. For my trip there, my family booked a mini van for transportation throughout our journey. We paid quite a bit. But it is a need definitely. However, do note that if one is to travel from Haikou to Sanya now, there is a train service where the whole journey will only take 45 min.

Thus, if one is to question whether the price of $50 is justifiable. It definitely is. Meals, transportation, accommodation for 5D3N at $80 is cheap!

Secondly, lets compare the quality of this deal. What I’m going to say is from my own recent experience. For your reference only

For this deal, one is travelling from haikou all the way slowly down to sanya. And along the way, there will be visits to places of interest. The only additional payment one may pay will be for the cruise ride along the Yudaitan and the payment for the entrance to the Buddhism Cultural Park. Personally, I have never been taken the Yudaitan cruise ride before. So I’m really not sure of how is it like. But I have been to the Buddhism Cultural Park before. And it is really a must visit. Especially for the older generations and parents, the park will definitely be interesting. My team have checked out the rates and found out to be 150 CNY for adult and 78 CNY for child. This turns out to be about S$29 for an adult and S$14.80 for a child. Definitely worth the price if you ask me.As for other attractions, I have never been there before. So i can’t give you an answer on whether they are good. But from the description, it seems pretty interesting!

Except for the costs mentioned above, there is really not much hidden costs left. The most “hidden” one will probably be the fee to enter the Buddhism Cultural Park. Since the coach will bring everyone there, if one choose not to visit the park, it just doesn’t seems right!

Also, if you have small kids or children in your family, they may not enjoy Hainan. It may be quite boring for them (according to my personal experience there). “

I just returned from the 5D4N trip to Hainan that I booked via deal.com, here’s my review.

For $50, this deal is really quite reasonable, so long as your expectations aren’t set too high… The tour agency in Hainan responsible for this trip is apparently the biggest in Hainan.

The hotels provided are around the 3-stars standard. Food-wise, edible, not too bad if you’re not a picky eater.

Each traveller will be asked to pick a Tour Package of their choice. My entire tour group of 35pax picked Package C. We were told that the additional items from A & B will be arranged during the Free&Easy periods, so travellers who signed up for C won’t have to wait for A & B because of the extra activities.

Package A: SGD260+ (includes 4 basic attractions, plus seafood dinner, foot massage, and a Thai-Girl Gala dinner)

Package B: SGD200+ (includes 4 basic attractions, seafood dinner and Gala dinner)

Package C: SGD160+ (includes 4 basic attractions only)

Our tour guide (Wang Song Tao) was quite good, the explanations of the attractions were very detailed, his stories were very engaging and interesting. The Air-Con bus provided was clean and good.

Of course, they brought us to some shopping places, but we were not forced to buy anything. And the trips there only lasted 45mins to 1hr max. Averagely about 1 shopping trip was arranged per day. Not too bad. In fact many of our tour group members purchased quite a lot of stuff, alot of freebies were given out too!

Overall i would rate this trip 4/5. The weather is really hot there, so remember to bring sunblock, umbrella and shades.

      Hi Potato,

Thank you for the super concise, detailed sweet review :) It’s every thing a traveller can ask for.

Just would like to ask on behalf of the readers the packages price was charged on top of the $50? Why is the package outside of the $50 ?

It is glad to hear that the food and the hotel are ok because for $50, It is really a worthwhile deal!

      Regards

      • Potato.ong 27 Jul 2011 at 2:54 pm - Reply

        Hello ADL team!

According to Travel Star, the $50 is only for accomodation, food, inland transportation and some FOC attractions. But it doesn’t include the entry fees for 4 of the attractions in the tour.

I believe some travellers might feel quite cheated since the Travel agency will only inform you of this additional charge 2-3 days before your departure.

But there’s no way around it, the attractions in Package C ($164) is the bare minimum. I’m not too sure if you can not opt for any of the packages… but that’ll just mean you’ll have to wait for 1-4 hours outside the attraction.

        Hope this helps! :)

          Hi Potato,

Absolutely thankful for this wonderful review! We have posted it up on our facebook and forum. It is surprising to us as well for the additional packages. It is a rare event that all of the travelers in your tour group manage to decide together on a single package. And we definitely do not want to wait outside the attractions :)

Thanks once again for contributing and hope you subscribe to us! Keep it coming! :)

Is the package compulsory? This is cheating! They didn’t even mention the extra cost which will be incurred!

      • ADL 3 Aug 2011 at 11:58 am - Reply

        Hi SilvVery,

Yes apparently the package is pretty compulsory as from our members feedback. They will inform you before the trip though. However, do bear in mind that the cost of the package is being pushed down to a very low priceline already.

Just returned fr the 5d4n hainan tour. For the $50 package, I should said you get what u paid for (which is not too bad, frankly). But one drawback, we (group of 13) were charged S$50 per night per person for 1 night hotel extension. Found out at the Jingyuan Hotspring Hotel that the rate is S$50 per room per night with 2 b/f whether thru internet or walkin guests. Wonder will u quries Travel Star? Thanks.
(By e way, staff of TS service is not friendly. Our quries about the hotel charges was not entertain)

      Hi Hong,

Thanks so much for your reviews and definitely it has proven very valuable to our many readers at this page.

We can send an enquiry mail to Travel Star at the moment and any results/outcome (if there are any) we will post here as well :) Were you asked to top up any more fees for any packages during the tour? If not, it will be really a worthwhile deal for many to purchase if such $50 deals do pop up again.

I agree with Hong, the staff at TS aren’t very helpful. Just to clarify, you extended your trip to 6D5N? Was that why you had to pay $50 extra?

        Hi Potato,

Here is a repost of the follow up comment through email by hong :

“Yes, the extra S$50 p/person is for the 1 night extension. (but the room rate is S$50/- per room over there). We have to book the extension fr TS because they
can’t confirm where we will be at on the last day of the tour.”

one question here, is tiger air the cheapest and convenient way to go hainan? arrival at haikou intl airport?
Roughly what is the price for the entrance of place of attraction?

thanks in advance for your advice!

            hi, joy,

It’s cheaper to fly by Jetstar but u have to book early. (I booked my tickets at S$160 plus $28 tax for two way). One thing, Jetstar doesn’t fly everyday. be prepare for 1 night extension if u are flying on friday.(please book yr own hotel and not thru the agent. It’s about S$55 per night per room).
We paid a total of S$165 for the 3 days optional tours.Frankly, u just have to go with the local guide. the hotel, lunch, dinner and transport had already covered more than the S$50 deal u had paid.(by e way, do not have high expectations of the food. It’s just plain simple fare). Happy Holidays !!!

            best regards.

Joy, are you thinking of boycotting the tours and go free-and-easy?

The entrance fees for each attraction is about 30-40 SGD. So for 4 attractions, it’ll cost about 160, thereabouts.

  6. joy 22 Aug 2011 at 8:56 pm - Reply

haha… dont think they will allow to go free and easy.it is a compulsory tour. why did u say so??

I do not think you can refund through travel agent for the stuff you bought. Is it with the same travel agent featured in the news? It would be best if you could contact them directly.

I guess how much you want to spend during the holiday and what exactly are you spending on is largely up to each individual. We were all brought to the chinese medical hall, but we only stayed for the free foot massage, we didn’t buy any of the chinese medical products.

The travel agent was featured in wanbao, or today newpaper, my goodness, i recognise the woman and shop in the picture. my advice is steer clear, rather lose that $50 than being agonised on the trip with all the relentless shops we were being brought to in the morning, afternoons and evenings. rather go back hotel and rest or at least see some good sightseeing. complete waste of money. The travel agency is a big cheat. staff unhelpful and callous.

          Hey Jack!

My trip is ending tomorrow, but since tomorrow is just gg to the airport it’s more or less completed. I’ll try to give as much detail as possible with regards to my impressions!

Actually I think the trip is quite good. I would have expected other China tours to do things the same way. One of the main complaints is probably just the hotel. It’s in a secluded area, and breakfast in the hotel SUCKS big time. Like, it’s really traditional Beijing dishes that most of my tour group doesn’t appreciate hah. Other than that, the hotel is pretty clean, but don’t expect too much though. Good thing is, you don’t spend too much time in the hotel other than sleeping. It’s really overall still fine.

As for entry tickets to places, mostly are paid for. Things that I had to pay extra for are not many. One is the trishaw ride in Hutong, which is RMB10 per carriage carrying 2 person. The other is in Yu He Yuan / Summer Palace, we have to pay RMB10 per person to take the boat rather than walk. Total cost of these are like, RMB30 for a group of 2. It’s a mere SGD6! Pretty insignificant I think.

For optional shows, half of my group went for the gongfu show, while none of us go for the other show. My tour leader isn’t really insistent about going for the optional shows.

Another important thing are the ‘shopping’ places. They brought us to 5 of these places I think: Silk factory, Jade factory, Tea house, some Chinese Medicine hospital and a Feng Shui place. Of these 5 places, silk factory is probably the place where no one will buy stuff. The price is just exorbitant, and I think most Singaporeans don’t really appreciate / see the need for silk blankets. For the others, prices are quite decent for some items. For example, a small stamp from the jade factory cost RMB50 and you can engrave someone’s name. It’s quite affordable and good as gift. My group probably can be considered small spender, since only 2-3group of pple (of 6 groups) usually buy stuff from one place, and in small amount. Anyway, again, I am thankful that our tour guide doesn’t really insist on us having to buy stuff.

For food, I would say they are probably about standard Singapore hawker center standard. Not the best, but they are really good enough (at least for most of my tour group). And one person in my tour group actually say that this food is better than the food in his previous tour, which cost him ~300SGD! So yeap, I would say food wise it’s really fine. Except for the breakfast, which sucked a bit, but that same guy said it’s still better than his previous tour’s breakfast. And there’s a grocery store nearby so some of us bought food for breakfast there.

Most importantly, I think these experiences will vary from tour guide to tour guide. I heard of reviews where they say their tour guide went rampage when tour group doesn’t purchase anything from the ‘shopping’ places. Thankfully, mine doesn’t go batshit crazy, though he still try to persuade us to buy, just not that insistent. I would say our tour guide is really nice actually. He made some effort to tell us of things to watch out for. Like when we went shopping to Silk Street (similar to Bugis St), he remind us to slash price up to 20% of original or more.

Apparently, I’m writing too much haha. But overall I really enjoyed the trip actually! Was initially worried but things seem to be fine.

Good luck and have fun with your own trip!

            Hi rkoe

Thanks so much for your detailed feedback. I feel much better now. I don’t have much expectation for the trip after hearing so much negative news about the travel agency and their Hainan trip. So far, no one has feedback on Beijing trip. And I am glad that you have enjoyed the trip. At least i won’t feel so worry about the trip. It really depend on the local tour agent whether to be very forceful on optional tours and not to give black face if they do not want to do so.

By the way, what is your hotel name?

            Thank you.

          • rkoe 25 Sep 2011 at 10:30 am -

my hotel is called Tai Shun Business Hotel if I’m not wrong. It’s located in quite a secluded area. It’s quite spacious if you are sharing with another person. For me, I went with both parents so there was an extra bed added and that took quite a lot of space. Comparatively though, the room is still (much) bigger than the hotel room I had in Hong Kong (Guang Dong Hotel).

Basic amenities are there, room looks a little old though. I would say it’s relatively clean too haha.

        • rkoe 19 Sep 2011 at 10:33 pm - Reply

anyway I’m looking at it from the viewpoint of someone who has never been to Beijing before. It may change for repeat visitors I guess. :X

And the ‘shopping’ parts I think are going to be present regardless of which Beijing tours you are going for, be it SGD50 or SGD500.

          • Jack 2 Oct 2011 at 4:19 pm -

Thanks rkoe. This is the first time I am visiting Beijing and since I have low expectation for the trip, I think I will enjoy too. Just hope the local tour guide is nice. Thanks again for all your feedback

Hi Mandy, When i went for the Hainan tour, my initial thought was to boycott the tours and go F&E too, but in the itinerary that will be provided by Travel Star 1-2 days before the tour, there’s a T&C that states you must pay a penalty (per pax) if you forgo the tours, and all hotel accommodation that was booked for you will be cancelled.

So do consider carefully if you really want to go F&E. Think you’ll end up paying much more if you boycott the tours!

  16. Mandy 29 Sep 2011 at 10:21 am - Reply

I enjoyed the tour so much. It was superb! Way above expectations. No pressure selling at all. Tour leader has > 10 yrs exp & 5 yrs exp in leading Singaporean tours. He’s really good and friendly. The tour group intends to meet him up for a gathering when he comes over for NATAS fair. Intending to sponsor my parentst to go. I called Travel Star who said the $50 promotion is valid till next year and I’m sharing this gd news with everyone I know!

The reason why it’s so cheap is cos (according to the tour guide) the China govt is encouaging overseas Chinese to come back to China learn about Chinese culture. Must say this was like an introductory tour, cos we don’t really visit a lot of places given the limited time. Will encourage you to extend free & ez at Shanghai. :)

With regard to the time spent in the pearl, tea, silk, jade, medical shops, I would say that the average presentation given by the shop staff is around 15 mins and the rest is shopping around and waiting for your fellow tour members to finish their purchases. Each stay at these shops can range to 30 mins to an hour, depending on how fast the members can complete their purchases.

I am wondering why Package A & B has seafood dinner and Gala dinner as I thought all the meals are provided? What is your recommendation, is it worth paying for seafood and gala dinner?

Is Zhang Yimou show one of the 4 attractions? Does children has to pay for the same price?

Have anyone taken the free Macau trip? Care to share if you have taken the tour.

    Appreciate your advise.

    Thanks

      Hi Alfred,

If i remember correctly, there will be 1 or 2 meals not provided by the tour agency due to the Itinerary planned for the day, but it won’t amount to much (probably only 1-2 dinners). So that’s where the Seafood dinner will fit in.

I can’t advise whether the Seafood dinner is worth it, for the Gala dinner, I think the show is somewhat similar to the shows in Thailand (that’s what the tour guide said).

For my tour group, we asked the tour guide for recommendation on cheap and good seafood, so we went out by ourselves to look for food for nights where dinner isn’t provided. It’s not too bad! There are places where you buy raw and fresh seafood from markets and bring them to the hawkers to cook, really cheap!

As for the Zhang Yi Mou show, unfortunately, it’s included in the package, but in me and my tour group’s opinion, it’s a total waste of time. I think it’s too “artsy” that no one understood what the show was about. I highly recommend you bring some form of entertainment to keep yourself occupied.

Hope this helps! Do continue posting if you have more questions! : )

        Hi Potato.Ong,

Thank you so much for your reply. Do you pay the $160 in SGD or RMB equivalent? I understand that you pay to the local tour guide directly. Does your group has any children? Do children pay $160 as well? If we do not take up the option package, are we allow to pay for the entrance free ourselves?

Have you take your free Macau trip already?

        Appreciate your advise.

        • Potato.Ong 3 Nov 2011 at 3:37 pm - Reply

          Hello again Alfred!

You can pay the tour guide in RMB or SGD, and you can pay at the beginning or towards the end. They are flexible that way. So if you have RMB after all the spending I’d suggest you pay the TG in RMB!

My tour group didn’t have children, but if i’m not wrong, there isn’t a different price for kids, i think they’ll have to pay the same.

And no, you MUST take either of the packages. Anyway i think if you were to pay for the entrance fees yourself, it might be more worth it to pay for the package as the local tour agents might be able to get the entrance at a cheaper rate.

Nope, i didn’t buy the Macau trip!

          Hope this helps! : )

Hello! I need a ticket for the Beijing $50 tour. Anyone got a spare? If you have been to Beijing please email me the name of travel agent and contact nos. Travel Star stated staying in Sariz International Hotel in the deal but it seems like those who went are not allocated in this hotel.

I just got back from both Zuhai/Macau and Hainan trip and would like to provide the following comments:

    Zuhai:
Overall it was a nice Trip. The tour guide in ZuHai is very good. Her name is Diana. The food is pretty alright with the exception of Zhongsan which is a smaller town. The hotel in Zuhai is so so as the bed is rather hard. The tour guide recommended us to watch an optional show on the dances of the ancient Chinese culture plus a simulated ancient navel battle between English and the Chinese at a lake. I would recommend this show however depending on the time of your visit, it could be cold as you are seated in an outdoor theater so bring enough warm clothing.

    Macau:
We have a 4-hour Macau trip which is pretty rush. The tour guide in Macau is so so as he tends to rush the group. The hotel in Macau is great, it is an international 4 stars hotel across the airport so we just need to cross the road to go to the airport. On the last day, it is free and easy. You can take the free shuttle bus to Galaxy Casino from the airport and from there you can take a free shuttle to visit Taipa Village.

    Hainan:
Again it was a good trip. We had a very good tour guide who has a Master degree in Law so he is very knowledgable on the history, economy and political situation of China and the region including Singapore. His name is Lewis. The hotel generally is good with the exception of the first night which is in a smaller town. This apply to food as well, generally smaller town food is not so good in the larger city.

Overall my family enjoyed both trips and it was also due to the good tour guide that we have on both trips.

      Hi Ann

Yeah I went for the S$268/pax Korea trip deal which was seen on many of the deal sites like Groupon and Deal.com.sg. I personally bought from Deal.com.sg. It is by CS Travel Pte Ltd.

I must say the service staff at CS Travel is very good and give very good pre-briefing sessions before you go as it was a winter trip. Any questions can be solved before the trip.

Trip wise, I would say the only thing that i have to comment would be the itinerary and the food. The hotel is rather fantastic for the first two day, especial the first day where we checked into a family room just for the two of us. The room normally cost S$300/ night. Day 3 and 4 hotel was smaller but still good nonetheless.

The food however is of small portion, especially when you have to share.Luckily for me and my spouse, we do not need to share and have ample portion. The food covers all of Korea’s variety of meals like bimbimbap and bbq meat but not of the best quality. However, the ginseng chicken meal was great.

The itinerary is definitely rushed. And it includes a lot of free entry places of attractions due to its low-priced tour package. It did not include Seoul tower and not enough time for Shopping districts. The ski-ing was not sufficient so be prepared to top up for it.Around S$40/ pax if you want to use the gondola for roughly 10 slides down (trust me 10 slides is way more than enough).

however, the tour guide is very good and honest. MOre than willing to give the USD $30. Lastly, this is a very good tour to buy IF you did extend your stay. I hope to post a more detailed review on this on the front page in the coming week with pictures :)

That’s all for the readers who chance by this post!

    Hi Zinc,

I will be posting it over the weekend. I paid $637 from Cathay. I bought it off Cheaptickets.sg with a Groupon Voucher :P . Save $51 per pax.

It was pretty fuss free from Cheaptickets.sg

    Hi Jason

Thanks for the inf. I was under the assumption that we have to buy the air tickets from the agency.

In this case, did you buy the tickets after checking with the agency as to the departure of the tour?

Looking forward to your next posting.

It might be too late for you as you might have already visited Sanya. Anyway if you have not visited Sanya yet, the hotel are generally alright. I could not recall the hotel name as they are local hotel but the itinerary from the travel agency will provide you with the hotel name.

Hi, I bought the Groupons for 5D4N Shanghai trip. I have booked the tour with Travel Star for 1st June 2012. However, they have yet to confirm on the tour for that period. When will they be able to confirm the tour? Can I know how to meet up with the tour guide in Shanghai if I book my own flight tickets?

    • ADL 4 Apr 2012 at 8:49 pm - Reply

      Hi Indie,

You will have to check with Travel star who will give you all the relevant Flight numbers for you to check out the gates, so that you can find your tour guide when u are there.

You must definitely confirm your tour first. normally within 1-2 days. Call them up and confirm, in fact it can be instantaneous.

      Hope it helps!

Hi, how was your trip? I am thinking to buy a travel deal from Groupon with Travel star too. I am worried it might be a scam, with hidden costs. Can you tell me about your experience? Thanks.

Hi all, i am going to buy the groupon RM98 Beijing 5D4N. Is it safe to buy because it is too cheap so my family a bit worry.
My brother said that that tour guide at China maybe will force you to buy the souvenir only the depart to next attraction. I am so keen to buy the groupon but i am so worry as well, i scare my family can not enjoy the trip.

    • Alfred 12 Oct 2012 at 1:41 pm - Reply

Based on my experience in Zhuhai/Macau and Sanya trip, the tour guides are pretty professional and they do not force you to buy things at the compulsory shopping trip like silk, tea, etc…

Thank you Alfred. But this will be a cheap package i dunno what will happen =(
Anybody and advice on it? RM98 5D4N Beijing with CS Travel.

Just read all the comments…the travel agent in Singapore, Travel Star in People Park, how trustable is the company? I saw a tour package under Groupon and my daughter told me that some vouchers are scams….how true is it?

    • ADL 4 Dec 2012 at 1:46 am - Reply

      Hi Poh Lin,

Generally travel coupons are safe with the more reputable names like CTC, Five Stars and many others which has hosted travel deals online for nearly two years.

For ADL ourselves, we have also bought some travel coupons and we are glad it was seamless and in fact it presents great value for some like the Korean trip review we posted.

Groupon has a refund guarantee so it should be fine.
