The answer has been revealed to you right at the beginning of the post, did you manage to guess it right when you first saw the title of the post?! ;)

Let’s now get to some serious work and compare these two deals for you. Firstly calculate all the additional charges you have to pay for both deals.

Price: $69 per pax
Passenger’s departure fee + fuel surcharge: $20 per pax
Batam terminal fee: $7 per pax
Tips for coach/tour guide: $2 per pax

Total: $69 + $20 + $7 + $2 = $98 per pax

Price: $79 per pax
Passenger Departure Fee, Fuel Surcharge, Batam Terminal Fee and Tipping: $29 per pax

Total: $79 + $29 = $108 per pax

$108 – $98 = $10

From the above calculations, we can see that should you choose to purchase from Groupon, you will be paying $10 more! Well, before we jump to any conclusion, let’s do more research here shall we? Now let’s list down what these two deals have to offer and compare the difference.

With reference from the table above, the package included is almost similar for both. However if you notice carefully, by paying $10 more on Groupon, you are actually paying for the 60 min Massage and shopping vouchers! But on another closer look, what’s missing in the Groupon deal is the ‘Welcome drinks’. The question here is, is that important at all? On this aspect, by paying $10 for an hour massage and shopping vouchers is probably worth it after all!

Now that we know that probably Groupon is the winner here, let’s go to the extra mile and check the rates if say you were to make the booking on your own for both deals! Firstly for All Deals Asia, it is stated that surcharge applies for peak period – weekend (fri and sat), eve of PH and PH and etc. Let’s assume both type of period you will be travelling on. For the non-peak period on 14 May(Monday) – 15 May (Tuesday) and for the peak period over a weekend on 19 May (Saturday) – 20 May (Sunday). With reference from Comparehotel.com.sg, the rates are as follow:

Now on Groupon, there are no weekend or holiday surcharge except for travelling on these dates: departures on 6, 7, 30 April and 5 May 2012

So let’s assume you are travelling over a period of weekend on 19 May (Saturday) – 20 May (Sunday).

With reference from Comparehotel.com.sg, the rate is as follows:

Now let’s do a check on the ferry tickets if you were to make the booking on your own. Taking the same non-peak period and peak period dates to travel on, the rates is as follow:

Adding the terminal charges up, the total you have to pay for a ferry ticket would be:

$34 + $6 + $3 + $0.60 + $0.60 + $0.75 + $0.25 = $45.20 per pax

*Note that the above price is correct at time of posting.

Now adding all the three prices that we got from All Deals Asia, GrouponBeeconomic and Own booking, let’s list down in a table form with the difference.

What ADL says:

Now looking at big picture with the different prices gathered, we can conclude that by purchasing from GrouponBeeconomic will entitle you to more savings! What more, there are no weekend or holiday surcharge! This will probably be an important reason for one to purchase from Groupon as most of us would prefer to travel over the weekend for a short getaway to Batam.

Next on the validity of both deals, both of the travel periods are until 30 June. The only difference is the date for the booking to be made by. We would think that for this case, what’s more important would be the price and what the deal have to offer. Do note that both deals is a minimum 2 to go deal and the prices stated above is only for one pax.

Need we say more? If you have been planning for a trip to Batam, you should be clear of which deal to go for now!

At ADL, we leak, you read.
