Without a doubt, group buying has allowed consumers to enjoy mega savings like never before. Never could we have imagined a hotel room at Genting could cost us less than $10, until group buying came along. However, are all these cheap hotel room deals at Genting really good?

Here at ADL, we’ve seen quite a number of variations for this kind of Genting hotel room deals. However, all of us here didn’t really have the opportunity to buy one of such deal and redeem it. Not until recently, when one of our ADL members finally found the time to do so! He purchase a $8 Genting deal from Deal.com.sg in December 2011, and  headed over from 8th to 9th January 2012. Check out what he has to say about this deal!

Price

Well $8 for a hotel room is quite a challenge to hunt for everywhere! It was simply one of those deals that would be such a waste to pass. The only thing was that I had to purchase 2 return coach tickets with Five Stars Tour at $49 each. This means that in all, each of us paid $53 for 2-way transportation and 1 night accommodation. However, breakfast wasn’t inclusive.

Nonetheless, I still felt that $8 itself was already a bargain! Also, there was another Genting deal by Transtar running concurrently with this deal. Although that deal cost only $3/pax for the hotel room, the compulsory transportation was $70 plus per pax, which adds up to be way higher than this deal.

Hence, I’ve decided to give the price a rating of 5 out of 5 stars!

Itinerary

Well, as mentioned above, apart from the transportation and accommodation, everything else is excluded. It was pretty much a free and easy tour. For meals wise, you won’t to worry as there are quite a number of restaurants, fast food outlets and food courts located there. However, they are all quite pricey in my opinion. For entertainment wise, Genting is well known for its casinos. Apart from that, there’s a shopping mall and other nearby attractions you can venture to. There’s a free shuttle bus daily from the bus station to this pagoda, which provides you with a magnificent view. You can also take the cable cars down to visit the strawberry farms and even ride a horse! Please be reminded that all these activities will be at your own expense. For myself, I only visited the shopping mall and casinos.

As it’s pretty much free and easy, I’ll give this aspect a rating of 3 out of 5 stars.

Merchant Quality

As my friend and I were only available on 8th and 9th January 2012, we wanted to make sure that there were still available slots on those date. Hence, before making purchase, we called Five Stars Tour up to ensure that there were still vacancies for those dates. They were nice enough to answer to our query and other questions we had. After purchasing the deal, we called to check if we could make a booking online or over the phone. Unfortunately, they require both of our passports and particulars. Therefore, we had to make a trip down to the Jurong Point outlet. It was quite a smooth and fast transaction. All we had to do was inform them of the dates and pay for the transport. The staff was alright too as he provided us with all the necessary information.

On the day of departure, we checked in at Five Stars Tour at Boon Lay Shopping Centre. The bus interior did look different from that in the website though. Everything else went in order and the bus left on time at 7am. It took the Tuas route, which I thought would be faster, unfortunately there was a jam at Singapore customs due to all the tour buses. As usual, we made a stop at Yong Peng, but I felt that one driver was quite rude or simply not so good in English. He came up to the top deck of the bus and asked “Cannot down ah?” Yes, it was a pretty awkward moment! Aside from that, the journey was alright.

We reached Genting about 2.30pm and the queue was really long! We showed our vouchers to the person who provided us with a queue number.

Huge crowd!

Everyone is staring at this panel…

We decided to have lunch while waiting. However, we missed our turn when we returned (SIAN!). Thankfully, there was another queue for those that missed their queue number. The check in went smoothly and we were given a high level on the 23rd storey.

Nice, clean hotel room

The check out the next day was even better as it was an automated express check out. All you have to do is to drop your key in it and you’re done!

In all, I’ll give this a rating of 4.5 stars!

Terms & Conditions

Well, the terms seemed pretty straightforward to me. The only thing was that it was compulsory to purchase return tickets for their coach. Hence, if you intend to drive up then this deal won’t be suitable for you. The rest of the surcharges didn’t apply to me as well as I went on a Sunday and returned on a Monday. However, I did check with them if it was possible to extend the trip for a night, but I was told that they didn’t allow it. Other than that, their terms and conditions seemed pretty normal and fair to me. Hence, there aren’t many restrictions on this deal and it is rather clear-cut.

4.5 stars for this.
